• Avoid areas with high marine mammal populations: Beaches near large seal or sea lion colonies might attract the adult great white sharks that feed on them. La Jolla Cove, for example, has many sea lions, which might suggest a higher risk for dangerous shark encounters, though the vast majority of shark sightings there are the harmless leopard variety.

• Juvenile Great White Hotspots: Waters off Del Mar Beach have been identified by researchers as a nursery for juvenile great white sharks, where they are tracked by lifeguards. While incidents are still rare, this specific area has increased monitoring and occasional precautionary closures.

• General Precautions: Regardless of the specific beach, you can minimize risk by following general safety guidelines:

• Avoid swimming at dawn or dusk, which are prime hunting times.

• Swim in groups and in areas with other people.

• Stay close to shore where you can still see or touch the bottom.

• Avoid areas near fishing activity or river mouths. 

Ultimately, the risk of a shark attack at any San Diego beach is statistically very low compared to other risks like drowning or a car crash on the way to the beach.
