• Rates can fluctuate based on your specific electricity provider and time-of-use pricing, so charging overnight will be cheaper. 

At a Plug & Go Charger

• The cost depends on the charging speed and time of day.

• At a peak rate of $0.71/kWh, a 100 kWh charge would cost about $71.

• At a lower rate of $0.102/kWh, the cost would be about $10.20 per full charge.

TO ACHIEVE

100 kWh energy storage system 

If the 100 kWh figure refers to the total energy stored, the weight must account for the fuel cell system and the substantial hydrogen tanks needed for long-term power. 

1. Calculate the weight of the hydrogen fuel. 

Hydrogen has a usable energy content of about 33.3 kWh per kilogram.

To produce 100 kWh, you would need at least 3 kg of hydrogen (100 kWh / 33.3 kWh/kg = 3 kg).

The system efficiency must be factored in.

Assuming a typical fuel cell system efficiency of 50–60%, you would need more fuel. At 60% efficiency, this is

3/0.6=5 kg of hydrogen

3 / 0.6 equals 5 kg of hydrogen

3/0.6=5 kg of hydrogen

2. Add the weight of the storage tanks. 

Hydrogen tanks are very heavy. Storing hydrogen at 700 bar (used in passenger vehicles) requires heavy composite tanks.

A type-4 composite tank designed to hold 1.21 kg of hydrogen weighs 26 kg, a tank-to-hydrogen ratio of over 21:1.

Using this ratio, the tanks for 5 kg of hydrogen would weigh approximately

5 kg×21=105 kg5 kg cross 21 equals 105 kg

5 kg×21=105 kg

This can vary with tank design and size. 

3. Account for the weight of the fuel cell stack and balance of plant. 

The fuel cell stack itself would be required to draw power from the stored hydrogen. The weight of this component depends on its maximum power output (kilowatts), not the stored energy (kilowatt-hours).

For a commercial vehicle, a 94 kW stack weighs nearly 200 kg. This doesn't include the weight of the fuel cell stack and the rest of the system.

Total system weight (excluding fuel) can vary significantly. One manufacturer produces a 60–100 kW fuel cell system with a weight of 300 kg. 

4. Sum the component weights.

A rough estimate for a complete 100 kWh system would be: 

Hydrogen fuel: ~5 kg Fuel tanks: ~105 kg (using a 21:1 ratio)

Fuel cell system (60–100 kW): ~300 kg

Total system weight (estimate): ~

How it works

• Source materials: Sodium is extracted from various sources, including brines from oil and gas production, seawater, and salt mines.

• Battery components: The sodium from the brine is then processed and used to create the active materials for the sodium-ion battery's positive and negative electrodes.

• Similar to lithium-ion: The fundamental operation of a sodium-ion battery is similar to a lithium-ion battery because both sodium and lithium are alkali metals. 

Applications and market

• Grid storage: Sodium-ion batteries are seen as a game-changer for grid-scale energy storage, particularly for long-duration storage needs as renewable energy sources become more prevalent.

• Electric vehicles: While currently having lower energy density than lithium-ion batteries, ongoing research aims to improve this. They are expected to be suitable for smaller electric vehicles, such as city cars and two- and three-wheelers.
