ALBERTA FUEL COSTS

Gasoline & Diesel.

As of April 1, 2024, Alberta's fuel tax is 13 cents per litre for clear gasoline and diesel, while marked fuel (used in certain situations) is taxed at 4 cents per litre.

The fuel tax rate is 13 cents per litre. 

Marked Fuel:

Fuel Tax Relief Program:

The program was suspended for 2023, partially reinstated at 9 cents per litre in January 2024, and then fully reinstated to 13 cents per litre on April 1, 2024. 

Fuel Tax Relief Program Trigger:

The fuel tax rate is determined by the average price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil over a 20-day period.

TEFU (Tax Exempt Fuel User):

Full Direct Remitter (FDR):

Refiners and large wholesalers are designated as full direct remitters and are responsible for reporting and remitting the fuel tax. 

Federal Carbon Tax:

The federal carbon tax is a separate charge on fuel, and it's expected to increase every year until 2030.
